SGP is a GEF programme that is
managed by UNDP in Kenya

The Global Environment Facility (GEF),
was established in 1991 as a partnership
for international cooperation through which
countries work together with international
institutions, civil society organisations and
the private sector to address global
environmental issues. The GEF provides
funds to meet the additional costs required
to ensure that development projects are
also addressing environmental concerns
and that countries are engaging in
sustainable development.
During the Earth Summit of 1992 that was
held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the GEF was
restructured to become an independent
organization.
The three initial partners that implemented
GEF-financed projects were the United
Nations Development Programme (UNDP),
the United Nations Environment Program
(UNEP) and the World Bank. Today, there
are more GEF agencies, including several
development banks, the Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations (FAO), the United Nations
Industrial Development Organization
(UNIDO), the International Fund for
Agricultural Development (IFAD), the
International Union for Conservation of
Nature (IUCN), the World Wildlife Fund
(WWF)
The GEF is also the financing mechanism

agreements also known as conventions,
including the;
•
UN Convention on Biological
Diversity (CBD)
•
UN Framework Convention on
Climate Change (UNFCCC)
•
The Stockholm Convention on
Persistent Organic Pollutants
(POPs)
•
The UN Convention to Combat
Desertification (UNCCD)
•
The Minamat Convention on
Mercury
The GEF also supports the
implementation of the Montreal Protocol
of the Vienna Convention on Ozone
Layer Depleting Substances.
Both developed and developing
countries provide funds through the GEF
to support activities related to
biodiversity, climate change, chemicals
and waste management, land
degradation, international waters, and
sustainable management of forests.
The GEF administers the Least
Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) and
the Special Climate Change Fund
(SCCF) which were established by the
Conference of the Parties (COP) of the
UNFCCC. The GEF also administers the
Nagoya Protocol Implementation Fund
(NPIF) that was established by the
Convention on Biological Diversity.
The GEF Small Grants Programme
At the Rio Summit, the call was issued
for “thinking globally, acting locally”
because of the need to address critical
environmental problems and achieve
sustainable development. The GEF
Small Grants Programme was
established in 1992 to respond to this
call for local action. By providing
financial and technical support to
projects that conserve and restore the
environment while enhancing people’s
well-being and livelihoods, SGP
demonstrates that community action
can maintain the fine balance between
human and environmental needs.
In Kenya, SGP is implemented by
UNDP in partnership with many donor
agencies, government
representatives, civil society
organizations, non-governmental
organizations and community-based
organizations.
SGP projects in Kenya are in the GEF
focal areas of Biodiversity, Climate
Change, Land Degradation,
Sustainable Forest Management,
International Waters, Chemicals and
Waste. SGP provides support to
environmental projects that promote
learning and knowledge management,
capacity development, gender
mainstreaming and poverty alleviation.
